Saturdays and Sundays at 11pm, 1pm, and 2pm. All winter cross country ski and snowshoe experiences are offered at Backbone Mountain Ski Farm. Reservations are required. Snowshoeing Tours: Explore the farm on snowshoes with an experienced outdoor guide on a 2-hour walk. Discover local lore, natural history, and peaceful quiet. We provide the snowshoes, guide, and hot cocoa afterward. Tours are offered Saturday and Sunday at 9:00am and 3:00pm. Winter Swallow Falls Nature Tours: 9:00a.m.until 11:00 a.m. at Swallow Falls State Park. Learn about the woods in winter, local flora and fauna; see the old growth forest, ice formations, and three beautiful waterfalls in winter. $10 per person (4 person minimum). Reservations required.
ALLEGANY EXPEDITIONS 800-819-5170 or 301-722-5170 With over 400 acres and 12 miles of scenic trails, New Germany State Park has long been the cross-country ski destination of choice for skiers of all levels. Allegany Expeditions, Inc. provides certified instructors for beginner and advanced cross-country ski lessons. Cross-country ski equipment is also available to rent. Enjoy hot chocolate and other refreshments in the cozy Recreation Hall. Open Fridays, Saturday, Sundays & Holidays from 8:30 am to 5 pm. Full day rental is $20, half day rental is $15, and a ninety minute lesson is $20. Call for reservations and class times.
ELK RIDGE NATUREWORKS 301-895-3686 Ecotours: Discover nature in winter on skis, snowshoes, or (if the "snow gods" aren't kind) on foot, along the backcountry trails of Savage River State Forest and Elk Ridge NatureWorks. Tours last 2 ½ to 3 hours and cost $25 pp (maximum of 6 persons). Reservations are required. Moonlight Ski: Explore nature at night on a Moonlight Ski at Elk Ridge NatureWorks. A Moonlight Ski lasts 1 ½ to 2 hours & costs $20 pp (maximum of 6 people). Reservations are required.

WISP RESORT 301-387-4911 Wisp Outdoors Nordic Center offers cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on 50 KM of trails ranging from beginner to advanced terrain. The Learning Area and beginner trail have snowmaking equipment for guaranteed snow. Trails are groomed daily. We offer guided tours, intro to cross country skiing & snowshoeing programs, lessons, and ski and snowshoe rentals. Wednesday is 'Locals Day', with great rates on lift tickets, rentals, lessons and snow tubing! Reservations are recommended. Bear Claw Snow Tubing Park offers 10 lanes of pure sledding fun without the hike up the hill! Plus, a new Tubing Park Building to warm and relax in after a day of tubing! Midweek open sessions $15, Weekend 2-hour sessions, Reservations are recommended.
MOUNTAIN COASTER WISP RESORT 301-387-4911 Take a ride on the newest attraction at Wisp Resort - the Mountain Coaster. Only the 4th of its kind in the U.S., this German-engineered hybrid of an alpine slide & roller coaster will zip in, out, down, around, and over the slopes of Wisp Mountain. ![]() This Downy Woodpecker (and her mate) is a regular on our feeders at the inn. You will also see hummingbirds (summer), Baltimore Orioles, cardinals, chickadees, American goldfinches, purple finches, red-bellied woodpeckers, nuthatches, Carolina wrens, juncos, titmice, eastern and rufus-sided towhees, red-breasted grosbeaks, song sparrows, chipping sparrows and cedar waxwings in season. Kingfishers, green and blue herons visit the stream and hawks abound on the ridge above the trees. |
